Tuesday 4 July 06
Checking out day.
I spent most of the morning in the
local Internet cafe. My laptop is setup to connect to my work PC
using VNC. This works perfectly when using an Ethernet LAN
connection, but not so reliable when using WiFi, dunno why? Anyway I
got a load of work completed, cleared my inbox and uploaded some new
pages. Not to shabby. This actually proves I can work from anywhere
in the world.
My transfer taxi turned up bang on
time. There was a bit of a queue for checking in because the
security desk only had two people working it, strange, but true. By
that stage I didn't care and only wanted to be on my way back home.
The food on the flight back was
superb. I asked for and got an extra bottle of free red wine.
We landed bang on time at 9:20. Once
again my case came off the carousal in fourth place.
Things go "tits-up"
Unfortunately, from there on things
went "tits-up". My son was not able to pick me up and the
earliest connecting train to Nottingham was 6:18 the following
morning. So, after a tiring day I thought, "bollixs, I'll book
into the airport hotel for a good nights sleep and catch an earlier
train.
Hilton Hotel receptionist, " Our
drop-in price for a standard
double is £165".
By this time it was nearly
midnight.
When I asked why I couldn't get the
£50 per room tariff (as displayed on the wall behind her) . I was
told that price didn't apply to my circumstances. A pricing
system like that should be illegal and probably is, but the stony,
uninterested expression and the hovering security guards made the
choices rather restricted. Either I paid the extortionate price or I
cleared off with my integrity and pride intact.
NOT a very welcoming place.
Anyway, I decided to try elsewhere.
FULLY BOOKED
It seems a number of outbound flights
were in the process of being cancelled and all spare accommodation
in the local area had been provisionally booked out by the airlines.
It was just after 2 am Wednesday
morning, my train was due to leave Gatwick at 6:18, so I sat in a
coffee house for four hours reading a book. Most uncomfortable.
I got home at 11:30 Wednesday.
Hardly any sleep for 26 hours.
Not my worse journey ever, but a very
close second!
NO more later
The Crete Adventure has FINISHED.
I plan to use the
JackatSea Blog
discussion board for day to day updates while not on my travels.

About JackonLand Blog/ Diary
This diary will be updated regularly
(20th June to 4th July 2006) and primarily it is intended to keep my
family and friends informed
about my progress during my working holiday in Crete. Hopefully,
I'll be able to publish some memorable
pictures and descriptions from each excursion and visits to historical places
of interest.
Other Internet users are welcome to
read the pages and download pictures for their personal use. I would
also encourage visitors to send recommendations of places to visit or
tour companies to use in Rethymnon, based on their
own experience or research.
