Thursday 22 June 06
A very hot day.
My plan to go on a boat trip has been
delayed due to over sleeping this morning. Bit of a rough night
actually, as the sideways toilet seat hinges finally gave way at
approximately 3:30 AM and nearly guillotined my "parts",
not sure I want eunuch status just yet! I then spent nearly 2 hours
fixing the dammed thing.
I did manage to make breakfast with 5
minutes to spare and was rewarded by a venomous scowl from the head
waitress. About the only thing left on the buffet at that time was
some crispy bread slices and raw porridge with bits in. I did ask
for cold milk but it seems only hot milk was available.
Fortezza of Rethymno Tour
Because I missed the boat trip I
decided to explore the Fortezza of Rethymno instead. This is a
seriously big structure. It took me nearly a hour to walk around the
outside. I then spent another hour or so inside the walls. In my
opinion the architect made some serious errors when designing the
enfilade for each corner as there is clearly some blind spots on the
cross fire/kill zones. Maybe it has been recently renovated by
"brickies" rather than soldiers.
I strolled around town tonight
visiting various alcohol outlets.
Feeling a bit lonely I returned to
the hotel bar to watch Brazil v Japan, but again ended up next to a
group of Eastern Europeans, who strangely enough seem to be the only people
who are permanently pissed. I think they're on an all inclusive deal
and get drinks for free.
Retired to my room to watch the
football in peace, which I could have done at home.
RE: Sideways Toilet
To
avoid any further accidents I've decided to use ONLY the ceramic rim
for seating, as the plastic ring is definitely dodgy now that the
hinges have been weakened by multiple visits.
Actually I've discovered that I can
watch the television by taking a 60% angle rather than a 90%
position and poking my neck around the door frame. Might come in
handy if we're 1-0 up with 2 minutes to go on Sunday!
Roll on England...

About JackonLand Blog/ Diary
This diary will be updated regularly
(20th June to 4th July 2006) and primarily it is intended to keep my
family and friends informed
about my progress during my working holiday in Crete. Hopefully,
I'll be able to publish some memorable
pictures and descriptions from each excursion and visits to historical places
of interest.
Other Internet users are welcome to
read the pages and download pictures for their personal use. I would
also encourage visitors to send recommendations of places to visit or
tour companies to use in Rethymnon, based on their
own experience or research.
