Depart Fort Lauderdale - QM2 15th January 2006 Around Americas Cruise
Itinerary

Unscheduled Stop

Sail time "Who Knows" hrs

17 & 18 Jan - Got really sunburned, won $40 in the casino and the ship's bust!

We pulled into Fort Lauderdale Tuesday morning to pick up some more passengers. Around 1 pm we sailed out of Fort Lauderdale to the tunes of 'Land of Hope and Glory' and "Anchors Away" when just out of harbour the ship hit bottom and apparently the one of the engines failed! The ship limped back into harbour last night and has been here since.

It seems the itinerary will have to change, as we have lost a full day's cruising. At this time there's been no announcement of repair progress or alternative arrangements. The people who booked NYC to Rio are all very concerned that their portion of the voyage might be cancelled or curtailed.

We have met some interesting people about the ship and have joined a pub quiz team. There are 6 in the team - 2 Texans, a man from New Jersey and 'Dave from Leicester'. The quizzes take place every day while at sea at 4.30 precisely! The competition is fierce and god help me if I get one more 'fact' wrong I'll probably be keelhauled or worse.

Rule one of Pub Trivia... It's only a game!

19 Jan - AM, Fort Lauderdale and the ships still bust!

It was announced last night that the ship will finish decommissioning the damaged engine around midnight and the voyage will continue with the ship using three engines instead of the full compliment of four. During his announcement the Commodore mentioned the magic word "compensation" and this has caused much speculation and wishful thinking among some passengers. I'm far more concerned with how the overall Around Americas cruise will be affected with regard to ports-of-call, but will obviously welcome a bit of "compo".

It's 3 am ship time and the fuel pumping operation is still continuing. Once again a sailing time has been missed. Our cabin is directly above the damaged engine and it's impossible to sleep with all the noise being generated by the repair team.

Finally underway at 6:30 am, no fanfare, no announcements as yet regarding changes to itinary.

More later

Jack
